Four nurses and a physician's assistant identified a business opportunity and are betting $750,000 of their personal fortunes to make it a reality.

All five have experience in surgery and critical care and recognized the need for people who can place and service PICC lines. So, they've launched a school that will train medical professionals in this and other complex procedures; the tuition will help generate start-up revenue for two mobile PICC clinics.

PICC stands for peripherally inserted central catheters. Unlike an IV line in the arm, a PICC is threaded deep into the body with the terminal end near the heart. It's used for long-term chemotherapy, antibiotics and to provide total nutrition for the incapacitated. Placing the line can take an hour in a sterile field but must be done by someone certified by the Infusion Nurses Society.
